Basketball is a great way for children to learn about teamwork, respect for authority and sportsmanship. In some leagues these elements are lost in the competition. In Upward Basketball at Allison Park Church these elements are included to create the best sporting experience for every child that participates. Upward Basketball is designed to reveal the winner in every child. Every child plays. Every child learns. “Every child is a winner!”
We also promote a positive playing experience by using a system called the “Circle of Affirmation.” From being at sporting events, you may have noticed that there is a chain reaction when somebody uses negative words toward coaches, players or referees. We encourage coaches and parents to only use positive words and set an example for the players. When children hear adults only using positive words they will follow that example. Through this they learn encouragement and respect for others.
Promoting Character and Self-Esteem in Every Child
- Providing an evaluation system that promotes equal teams and opportunities
- Establishing a one-hour practice and game each week
- Implementing a substitution system for each team, allowing every child equal playing time
- Creating the opportunity for every child to learn the skills of the game
The emphasis is placed on having fun and good sportsmanship, not the scoreboard and standings.
